CHEYENNE — Shay Avants “floated the idea.”
The head coach at Robert Lee High School in West Texas didn’t really know if his idea would turn into anything more but he figured he would give it a shot.
The team that was scheduled to play his Steers on September 30 had only eight kids and had requested to play a junior varsity game instead of varsity. With Texas high school teams agreeing to home-and-home contracts, finding a replacement just before the start of the season wasn’t going to be easy.
So, he floated the idea of getting Matt Jensen and his Meeteetse High School team down from Wyoming to Texas for a Week 0 game.
Suddenly, the idea became reality.
“It just seemed like a good opportunity for our kids to go down and play a full game,” Jensen said.
“It wasn’t anything that we really sought out. It just kind of happened by accident. Everything just kind of worked out and it was a great experience.” Continue reading
