Rivalry Saturday

This past Saturday’s East-Central boys and girls basketball games were good ones. In case you missed it, both East squads erased double digit holes to claim victory. The girls game was especially entertaining.

Here are two “By the Numbers” boxes from those games we didn’t have room for in Sunday’s paper.

East-Central girls by the numbers

7 –Points scored by East senior Jaqueline Case, all of which came in the second overtime.

10 – Free throws made by East on 13 attempts in overtime. Case was 5-for-5.

11 – Central’s largest lead of the game, which it held midway through the third quarter.

16 –Points off the bench for Central. Sophomore post Katelyn Means accounted for 14 of those before fouling out in the first overtime.

21 – Points Central senior Lindsey Fearing scored on 3-pointers. She finished with a game-high 31 points.

East-Central boys by the numbers

3 – Fourth-quarter field goals for Central, all of them 3-pointers.

7:04 –Time remaining in the third quarter when East guard Jorden Mossey picked up his third foul. Mossey eventually scored six of his eight points in the fourth quarter, including the eventual game-winning shot.

17 – Central’s largest lead of the afternoon, which it held midway through the second quarter.

21 – Points Central scored in the second quarter to take a 34-22 lead into the half.

Hornets are for real

Having watched them twice now, I can say without any doubt that the Pine Bluffs boys basketball team is the real deal. They have depth and they have four cats that can score in bunches. Led by sophomore post Blayne Gilbert who is one of the best players in the state. For those who didn’t see his performance Tuesday night, Gilbert simply dominated visiting Pawnee, Colo., in the Hornets’ 53-33 win. He finished with 14 points, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked four shots. Not only does the rest of this season look bright for Gilbert, but he still has two more years. Watch out! With the win, Pine remained unbeaten at 7-0, and its only real test will come against Eastern Laramie County rival Burns later this month. Get past their bitter rival, and Laramie County’s best shot at winning a state title lays in the hands of your Hornets.
