Las Flores De Colores perform at Goins

One element about photojournalism not a lot of people talk about is flexibility. I don’t know how many times I have gone to an assignment expecting something and getting something completely different. Yesterday I headed over to Goins Elementary to photograph the Las Flores De Colores dancers perform for students.

I walked in and realized that this was one of the many schools in town with a ‘Den of Darkness.’ In this case the Goins Gym was one of these places devoid of light that cause most photographers to start digging in the camera bag for a flash. I hate using flash and unless all else fails will not use one.

I decided to take a different approach and get something a little different. I headed around to the back of the stage and noticed some dancers getting dressed. The dancers didn’t mind me shooting and even asked me to snap a few. After a few minutes they forgot about me and started focusing on the performance. I just tried to be a fly on the wall and choose my shots carefully. I was happy with the images I made and left for another assignment after the performance was over. Thanks for taking a look.
