Michael Smith

Photographer Michael Smith started making images while attending Green River High School in 1986. In 1987 he won the WHSAA photo of the year along with multiple other awards in sports, feature and special effects categories. After graduation from GRHS in 1987 he attended the Savannah College of Art and Design in pursuit of a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography. In 1991 and 1992 Michael won honors at the Presidents Choice Student Art Exhibit in painting, sculpture and photography. He studied under master photographers Craig Stevens and Lucien Clerge along with attendance to many workshops on printing and image making. After four years in Savannah he transferred to the University of Arizona to finish up his BFA. While at Arizona, Michael worked with fine art photographer Harold Jones and volunteered at the Center for Creative Photography.
After college Michael worked for a variety newspapers and wire services as a photojournalist in southern Arizona. During that time he won many awards including small daily Photographer of the Year while working for the Bisbee Daily Review/Sierra Vista Herald. In 1996, Smith moved to Washington, DC to pursue freelance and editorial work. While in Washington Michael became a member of the White House Press Corps and was the in-studio still photographer for NBC’s ‘Meet The Press’ with Tim Russart. In 1999 he began working for Getty Images and covered many political and editorial stories that were featured in Time, Newsweek, People, The New York Times, and many other publications. In 2001 Michael moved back to Wyoming and started working at the Laramie Daily Boomerang. In 2005 Smith joined the Wyoming Tribune Eagle as photo editor and chief photographer.
