Dinner to help send microscopes to Zambia

Where: Knights of Columbus Hall, 507 W. 28th St., Cheyenne

Cost: $7 for adults, $4 for a child’s plate

Who benefits: Proceeds will go to pay for shipping microscopes to the Zambia, Africa Seminarian Science Lab. The Knights of Columbus were able to obtain the microscopes from the old St. Mary’s School science lab.

More information: The menu consists of deep-fried taco, smothered beef and bean burrito, Spanish rice, refried beans, ice cream, coffee and punch.

Scrapbooking crop to help local food pantry

What: Charity Scrapbooking Club of Cheyenne event to help Needs Inc.

When: 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Feb. 6

Where: Unitarian Universalist Church, 3005 Thomes Ave., Cheyenne

Cost: Free, but participants are asked to bring non-perishable food items for the food pantry. Vendors are welcome for a small fee.

More information: This is the second in a series of monthly scrapbooking crops that will take place on the first Saturday of each month. Each event will benefit a different local charity.

Chili event to raise money for Boys & Girls Club

When: 5-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29

Where: Holiday Inn, 204 W. Fox Farm Road, Cheyenne

Cost: $10 for adults, $5 for children 6 to 12, free for 5 and under.

Tickets can be purchased in advance at the club, 1700 Snyder Ave., or from a board member and also will be on sale at the door the night of the event.

The entrance fee includes chili, soft drinks, beer and ice cream.

More information: In its second year, the Chili Challenge is an event to raise general operating funding for the club’s youth development program.

Attendees sample chili while enjoying the musical talents of Todd Dereemer, Steve Scott and Marke Wielang. Attendees are asked to vote for their favorite chili with their dollars (or checks) at one or more of the team’s booths. At the end of the night, the team with the most contributions for the club will win the People’s Choice Award.

The menu is pancakes, ham, juice and coffee. Prayers for Haiti will be held intermittently during breakfast.

Make-A-Wish Foundation seeks local volunteers

What: Make-A-Wish Foundation of Wyoming is currently looking for volunteers in the Cheyenne area.

More information: Since 1985, the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Wyoming has been granting wishes of Wyoming children between the ages of 2-1/2 and 18 with life-threatening medical conditions. The organization does not consider the child’s background, beliefs, income or any other demographic factor.

The foundation also has participated in “Wish Assists,” in which wish kids from around the country and the world who want to visit Wyoming make trips to Yellowstone National Park, Jackson Hole, make dinosaur digs, visit guest ranches or simply come to see snow.

Volunteering with Make-A-Wish is not time-consuming – you choose the level of input you feel is right for you. No amount of time or service is too little.

Barn dance, chili supper to help local family

Where: Bunkhouse Bar and Grill, 14 miles west of Cheyenne on Happy Jack Road

Cost: $8 per person for chili and fixings, one side and one drink ticket.

More information: There also will be a silent auction during the barn dance, as well as a raffle drawing for half a beef, including processing.

Volunteers and donations for the silent auction are still needed.

Meares, daughter of longtime Cheyenne residents Tom and Micky Meares, suffered devastating injuries as a result of a car accident. This is the second benefit to help her family with medical costs.

Garage sale to help send students to band festival

Where: Commons area, Cheyenne’s Central High, 5500 Education Drive, Cheyenne

More information: The band will travel to Disney World in Orlando for three performances, while the color guard will perform once. There will be critiques and awards presented during the festival.

The garage sale will feature all kinds of items, including sports equipment, furniture, books, clothing and toys.
