What: Join Safehouse Services in its “Walk in Her Shoes” march

When: 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28

Where: Starting at the train engine near East Lincolnway in Holliday Park, Cheyenne

More information: Men, women and children are invited to “walk in her shoes” by wearing women’s high-heeled shoes and walking around Holliday Park. The event is to help raise awareness of domestic violence in our community.
A trophy will be awarded to the man with the highest heel.

What: Cheyenne Animal Shelter participates in Iams Home 4 the Holidays adoption campaign

When: Now through Jan. 4

Where: Cheyenne Animal Shelter, 800 Southwest Drive, Cheyenne

More information: All dogs, cats, puppies and kittens adopted during the Home 4 the Holidays event will go home with their new family and an Iams Adoption Kit. Included in each kit are information tips to help the new parent and their furry friend get off on the right paw.

What: Job Corps is sponsoring USA Weekend Make A Difference Day donations to four local agencies.

When/where/items to donate:

10 a.m.-2 p.m., Boys and Girls Club of Cheyenne, 1700 Snyder Ave. Items to donate: Board games, puzzles, art or craft supplies, snacks, cleaning/janitorial supplies, gift cards to local stores, gas cards, air hockey table, ping pong paddles, kids magazine subscriptions, adult-sized plastic stacking chairs.

9 a.m.-4 p.m., COMEA House homeless shelter, 1504 Stinson Ave. Items to donate: Gently used/new winter coats, hats, gloves, long underwear, scarves, boots; consumables such as milk, meat products, coffee and sugar; hairbrushes/combs, razors, deodorant; cleaning supplies, laundry soap, disposable cups, toilet paper, napkins; twin mattresses and general office supplies.

10 a.m.-1 p.m., Cheyenne Interfaith Hospitality Network, 2950 Spruce Drive (basement of Grace United Methodist Church). Items to donate: Gently used children’s winter apparel, laundry detergent, shampoo, conditioner, bleach, adult and children’s socks; huge need for gently used toys.

10 a.m.-5 p.m., Safehouse Services, Pickle Parlor, 211 E. Lincolnway. Items to donate: Food (including meat and freezer items), drinks (juice, etc.); unopened hygiene supplies such as full-size shampoo/conditioner, toothpaste, razors, deodorant; cleaning supplies, toilet paper, paper towels; diapers, laundry/dish soap, towels and dish cloths.

Canned food drive both days this weekend

What: Community canned food drive, sponsored by Cheyenne Board of Realtors

When: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24 and Sunday, Oct. 25

Where: Both Albertsons locations (Yellowstone Road and East Pershing Boulevard) and King Soopers on Dell Range Boulevard, Cheyenne

Another way to help: Donors also may take their nonperishable food donations to the Cheyenne Board of Realtors office at 500 E. 18th St. between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday through Oct. 30.

Canned food drive runs through Oct. 22

What: Community canned food drive, sponsored by Cheyenne-area credit unions, to benefit Needs Inc.

Where: All credit union locations in Cheyenne

Special collections today: From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., canned food items also will be collected at both Albertsons locations, Walmart and King Soopers in Cheyenne.

Casino bus fundraiser to help Cancer Society

What: Relay for Life 2010 Casino Bus Fundraiser, sponsored by Team DFS Relay for Life team

Where: Chartered bus from Cheyenne to Black Hawk, Colo.

When: Saturday, Oct. 31; bus leaves at 7 a.m. from 1510 E. Pershing Blvd. and returns to Cheyenne by 6 p.m. for those who have trick-or-treating obligations.

Cost: $25, including incentive coupons at the casino upon arrival

More information: There will be a costume contest, games and prizes on the bus, but participants are not required to dress up. Proceeds go to benefit the Wyoming Department of Family Services’ American Cancer Society Relay for Life 2010 team.

Dinner to kick off annual Toys for Tots drive

What: Kickoff chili dinner and silent auction for 2009 Marine Corps Reserves Toys for Tots drive

Cost: $5 for adults and children 6 and older; children 5 and younger free.

Other ways to help: Monetary donations, as well as new, unwrapped toys, will be accepted.

What: Local beverage distributor Cheyenne Beverage asking patrons to help fight childhood cancer

When: Throughout the month of October

Where: Cheyenne Beverage Co., 1133 W. 27th St., Cheyenne

How you can help: Employees are asking patrons to make a $1 or $5 donation to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital through the 17th annual St. Jude Halloween Promotion.

Donors can then write their names on pumpkin-themed pinups that will be displayed inside the company’s offices through Halloween.

What: 32nd annual ABATE of Cheyenne Toy Run

When: Saturday, Oct. 10; 10 a.m., Toy Run and Toy Drive begins; 1 p.m., Toy Run leaves AMVETS Post 10; 2-6 p.m., ABATE of Cheyenne After Party

Where: Toy Run starts at AM-VETS Post 10, 3839 E. Lincolnway, and proceeds through Cheyenne, ending at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1881, 2816 E. Seventh St., just off Nationway

Who is involved in the toy run: ABATE of Cheyenne, The Salvation Army, Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots, Wyoming Mighty MOPARS Car Club

More information: All toys collected are for The Salvation Army’s Operation Christmas and the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots and will be distributed in Laramie County communities.

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the community is invited to bring a new, unwrapped toy or two and a few nonperishable food items to AMVETS Post 10 (free raffle ticket for each food item brought). There will be T-shirt sales, raffle ticket sales, door prize registrations, free water and soda, breakfast food sales to benefit Safehouse-Sexual Assault Services at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center’s Extended Care Unit. You also can see your favorite classic cars and browse among all types of makes and models of motorcycles.

The After Party will be another toy collection point and will include food and beverages, raffle ticket sales and drawings, door prize drawings, silent auctions and live music by Seven Sundays. Money raised at the party will help provide Christmas dinner to Safehouse families.

Homeless support group needs warm coats

What: The Wyoming Coalition for the Homeless is in need of warm coats and jackets for local homeless individuals.

When: Now and throughout the fall and winter months

Where: Wyoming Coalition for the Homeless Welcome Mat, 907 Logan Ave., Cheyenne

Hours: Donations can be dropped off 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Saturday and holidays and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday.

More information: Especially needed are men’s jackets and winter coats sizes large to 4XL.
