Great Lakes collects food for Salvation Army

When: Throughout the month of July, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday; weekend hours are limited.

Where: Great Lakes Aviation counter at Cheyenne Regional Airport, 300 E. Eighth Ave.

How you can help: Bring non-perishable food items to the Great Lakes counter, and you will be eligible to win one of four round-trip tickets between Cheyenne and Denver. Donate as much as you like, but only one entry per person per week is allowed.

Registration begins for Komen Race for the Cure

What: Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure

When: Saturday, Aug. 8; race-day registration begins at 6:30 a.m.; survivor celebration ceremony at 7 a.m.; race begins at 8 a.m.

Where: Starting at the State Capitol, Cheyenne

Cost: Adult registration through Aug. 1 is $25; registration on race day is $30. Youth 12 and under can participate in Kids for the Cure for $5 each.

Other related events/costs:

Sleep In for the Cure: Can’t make it on race day? Receive a race T-shirt and special Komen Wyoming logo fleece blanket shipped to your home. Cost: $30.

Flowers for the Cure: Help decorate the race stage and pay tribute to a loved one who has battled breast cancer or an cancer supporter by buying a pink miniature rose plant. Cost: $15, and you can pick up your plant after the race.

Friends for the Cure donation program: Raise donations on the form found in the brochure. All participants are eligible for prizes based on individual donations collected.

Paws for the Cure: On Aug. 1, take your dogs to the baseball park in Lions Park for the second annual dog walk around the lake. Cost: $30, includes a special T-shirt and Race for the Cure registration and T-shirt. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m., with the walk starting at 9.

YMCA wants donation of clothes, other items

Night of the Child to help Prevent Child Abuse

When: 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 24

Where: Little America Hotel and Resort Grand Ballroom, 2800 W. Lincolnway, Cheyenne

Cost: $50 per ticket or $400 for a table of eight; tickets are limited and on sale through June 18

More information: Night of the Child is Prevent Child Abuse Wyoming’s most crucial and largest fundraiser of the year.  Funds raised at this event go toward child abuse prevention and public awareness programs throughout Wyoming.

Night of the Child includes dinner, cocktails, an auction and dancing to the Law North of Crow Creek.  Guest speakers include Rose Kohr, founder of Prevent Child Abuse Wyoming, and Jim Murovich, CEO of Prevent Child Abuse America.

The Knighthood of the Child award, going to the person who has made the biggest difference in the prevention of child abuse in Wyoming during the past year, also will be awarded during the event.

Annual Duck Derby helps Special Friends

When: 2 p.m. Saturday, June 27

Where: Near the amphitheater in Lions Park, in conjunction with Frontier Refining Superday

How to donate: Buy a single duck for $5, a “Quack” (four plus one free) for $20 or a “Flock” (20 plus five free) for $100.

Ducks are available at Youth Alternatives/Special Friends, Wyoming State Bank, Unified People’s Federal Credit Union, First Education Federal Credit Union, Western Vista Federal Credit Union, Meridian Trust Federal Credit Union, Chick-Fil-A, Ruby Juice and Culver’s restaurant.

More information: Prizes include a first prize of $1,000 cash, a second prize of $500 cash and a third prize of $250 cash. One lucky duck could win $1 million, and there are dozens more prizes.

Who benefits: Special Friends is a program that matches adult mentor volunteers with at-risk youth.

Volunteers are needed to work a shift on Saturday in the Welcome Mat Day Center. Volunteers also are needed to teach a variety of classes for those coming into the Welcome Mat.

Raffle to help Lions buy vision equipment

More information: Laramie County Lions are in need of new photo screeners to support its Early Childhood Vision Screening Project. Photo screeners are cameras attached to a computer that are used to screen children for a variety of vision problems.

BBQ benefit to aid couple hurt in ATV accident

When: 2-5 p.m. Sunday, June 14

Where: Bunkhouse Bar, Happy Jack Road, west of Cheyenne

Cost/features: The bar is offering a shredded BBQ beef sandwich, chips and a draft beer for $10, with profits going to help Kolkman and Weber. There also will be a silent auction and raffle of many items.

More information: Kolkman and Weber were involved in a serious ATV accident on Memorial Day at Fox Park in the Snowy Range.

Weber, a nurse at Life Care Center of Cheyenne, suffered skull and face fractures, broken ribs, etc., and remains in intensive care in Loveland, Colo. Kolkman, a Union Pacific Railroad maintenance worker, is home after suffering deep-tissue injuries, but he is still unable to work.

The fundraiser is to help them with out-of-pocket medical costs, as well as household expenses, since neither is able to work right now.

Donations accepted: In addition to attending the fundraiser, cash donations and raffle items are still being accepted.

Part of Arby’s sales June 18 to help New Futures

What: Arby’s Fundraiser Night for New Futures, a division of Western States Learning Corporation

More information: During this three-hour time period, 20 percent of sales will be donated to New Futures.

New Futures’ mission is to increase college awareness and prepare students for success in college and career. It does that by providing programs such as College for a Day and Career for a Day for middle-school students statewide.
