-”Caro mio ben” Cecilia Bartoli

”Bartoli’s voice is pure gold. She is one of my favorite opera singers, and this piece by Giordano has a simplicity and tenderness which is somehow haunting.”

-”Pur ti miro” Dana Hanchard

“I only recently discovered this musical duet from Monteverdi’s opera, ‘The Coronation of Poppea.’

“Actually, some debate whether Monteverdi wrote it or not.

“It is so beautiful. I love to hear the way to two voices play off each other, creating harmonies and gorgeous dissonances as they sing of love for each other.”

-”Somewhere Over the Rainbow” Israel Kamakawiwo’ole

“This song will always touch a special nerve for me.

“Like a lot of people, it reminds me of youth and innocence, of hopeful and limitless possibilities, of a better place.

“The original with Judy Garland is great.  This version, by a Hawaiian musician with special expressive abilities, gives it an even deeper dimension.  No matter that he messes up the lyrics a few times (on purpose?).”

-”Don’t Stop Believin’” Journey

“What can I say? I am a cheesy, 80’s classic rock romantic. I just love this song.

“Also, have you ever noticed how the song is pretty unusual in its form?

“The title of the song doesn’t appear until toward the end.”

-”Nessun dorma” Luciano Pavarotti

“Wow, what a voice! Pavarotti was one of the all-time best.  And what inspiring music!

“Many will recognize this from The Three Tenors.  The triumphant ending of this aria from Puccini’s opera ‘Turandot’ makes me feel like I will overcome any troubles or obstacles.”

-”Anyway” Martina McBride

“I love her voice, and I love that she wrote this piece herself.  The lyrics are so simple and so true.  And when she builds up to the climax…it is so heartfelt and powerful, and just at that point, notice how long she sings without taking a breath. Amazing!”

-”Train in the Distance” Paul Simon

“Maybe there’s a theme running through all these selections…dealing with difficult times and being hopeful, optimistic for the future.

“This Paul Simon song speaks to me right now.  Just like everyone loves the sound of a train in the distance, everyone thinks the grass is greener, or hopes it will be.

“For me, Paul Simon is without question one of the greatest songwriters.  He creates moods and characters and tells amazing three-minute stories that sometimes really make you think.”

-Mahler’s “Symphony No. 2, Solti & London Symphony”

“I’m getting ready to perform this piece next month.

“It’s incredible. So moving.

This recording is a very exciting one.  The fourth and fifth movements of this symphony can take you to another world and make you cry.”

-”Bohemian rhapsody” Queen

“There’s been a lot said about this song. I enjoy listening to it just for the fun of it.  It’s brilliant, too. But it gets me happy… and reminds me of ‘Wayne’s World.’”

-”One day more” ‘Les Misérables’

“Probably my favorite musical (although ‘Lion King’ is up there!), ‘Les Mis’ is so powerful in its emotions.  Again, this song is hopeful and expectant about the future. It’s weird how so many of these songs are like that…”
